YDM asks organisers of Tour de France to support Yorkshire over ‘Whitehall snub’

August 9, 2013

The Yorkshire Devolution Movement has written to the organising body of the Tour de France to intervene over news of the Whitehall snub reported in last Saturday’s Yorkshire Post. The newspaper reported that ‘Whitehall officials are engaged in a secret plot with a London-based tourism agency to remove Yorkshire’s name from next year’s hosting of the Tour de France and rebrand it as an all-England event’.

YDM has written to the French company Editions Phillipe Amaury whose subsidiary, ASO, organises the Tour de France. The letter draws attention to this potential whitewashing of Yorkshire from next year’s Grand Depart of the Tour and asks the organising body to intervene in confirming Yorkshire’s name in 2014.

We say:

“There can be nobody in Yorkshire who finds this attempt to whitewash the county from the Tour de France next year as anything other than disgraceful. It is especially significant when we think one year ago we were ALL enjoying the ‘London Olympics’. It is typical of the way Whitehall treats Yorkshire.

“We have written to the Tour de France organisers in the hope they can ensure that the ‘Yorkshire Grand Depart 2014’ remains exactly that.”
