Wales to get more powers – Yorkshire waits for a few bones to be thrown its way

April 22, 2013

It’s great to see the Liberal Democrat Chief of the Treasury commit to greater powers for the Welsh Assembly in this case tax and borrowing powers albeit after a referendum.

What is needed now is the same sort of commitment to look at devolution to those English regions that want the power to make decisions locally. All Liberal Democrats that believe in devolution should be pressing for such a commitment in the party’s General Election manifesto. In the meantime we want a decision from George Osborne that funding for transport schemes in Yorkshire will be realised. The imbalance of devolution as exists in the UK needs some balancing up fast and this would be one way to close the gap.
